The Cognitive Science Student Association is pleased to host the sixth annual California Cognitive Science Conference (CCSC). The theme for CCSC 2014 is “Creativity: The Inspired Mind” and we will be exploring this exciting topic through the lenses of psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, anthropology, computer science, philosophy of mind and more.

The CCSC is an annual all-day symposium bringing together hundreds of students, researchers, and members of the general public from around the world who are passionate about the interdisciplinary field of Cognitive Science. We feature focus talks given by prominent scientists and thinkers from a wide variety of disciplines. Our acclaimed poster session provides undergraduates with the opportunity to present their own original research alongside graduate students and professional researchers. The CCSC concludes with an interdisciplinary panel discussion designed to encourage exchange among leaders in Cognitive Science, during which panelists and attendees are encouraged to synthesize the information presented that day, discuss conclusions with each other and collectively explore future directions for research. Started in 2009, the conference has now grown to attract international collaboration, national media recognition and annual visits from both start ups and industry giants.

In one of the featured talks, Creativity Post cofounder Dr. Elliot Samuel Paul will speak on the topic of "Creativity, Identity, and Love." Drawing on philosophical insights from Aristotle as well as empirical research on motivation, passion, and flow, Dr. Paul argues for the following. Who you are is a function of what you love. And the way to flourish is to pursue what you love for its own sake, thereby enabling these other goods: internal harmony, self-expression, a distinctive kind of enjoyment, and greater chances for distinguished achievement — especially in creative endeavors.

Other featured speakers include Ed Catmull (President of Walt Disney Animation Studios, and President and Cofounder of Pixar) and eminent cognitive scientists Dean Simonton (distinguished professor of psychology at the University of California at Davis), Rex Jung (neuropsychologist, brain imaging researcher, and an assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of New Mexico), and Harold Cohen (professor emeritus of Visual Arts at UC San Diego).
