Robert Greene Interview, Part 9: "Suppressing Real Emotion"

Media December 09, 2020 / By Milena Z. Fisher, Ph.D.
SYNOPSIS

"A lot of our (current) culture is about only showing your good side, only showing that you are a saint, only showing that bright, happy side. (...) And you are repressing three-quarters of what is really going on inside of you." – Robert Greene

In 2019, TCP's Milena Z. Fisher visited Robert Greene, the author of many international bestsellers The 48 Laws of Power, The Art of Seduction, The 33 Strategies of War, The 50th Law, Mastery, The Laws of Human Nature, etc. to have a conversation about his views on creativity. You can read Milena's subsequent article A Voice Of Wisdom In Creativity Quarrel: "Mastery" by Robert Greene in which she summarizes why mastery is such an essential read for anyone interested in creativity.

This video presents Greene's view on how social interaction is necessary for the development of skills that allow us to productively function in society. He argues that the tendency to repress all negative emotions we feel makes us detached from the reality of others and of ourselves. Only opening up to what's dark allows us to move beyond it; the more we practice it, the better we adjust.
